Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information Wheels Up collects, how it's used, and who it's shared with, both on this website and inside the Wheels Up app. Wheels Up is developed by 3 Sixteen Studios.
Information we collect
Waitlist signup (this website)
When you join the waitlist, we collect your name, email address, and country. This is submitted to our form processor, Formspree, and used only to tell you about early access.
Account information
Creating an account in the app is handled by our authentication provider, Clerk. We store your email address, username, display name, and profile photo (if you add one).
Flight tracking data
When you search for or save a flight, the flight number and date are sent to our flight-data providers (FlightAware AeroAPI, with AeroDataBox as a secondary source) to retrieve status, gate, and aircraft details. Your saved flights are stored on your device and in our cloud database (hosted on Supabase) so they sync across sessions.
Boarding passes and tickets
Boarding passes and other tickets you attach to a flight are stored on your device only. They are not uploaded to our servers. The app reads the barcode on a boarding pass on your device, using a reader that runs inside the app, to show the flight, seat and booking details and to add the flight for you. That reading never leaves your phone, and the pass and what it says are removed when you delete the flight or sign out.
Camera
If you allow it, the app uses your camera only when you tap the camera button to photograph a boarding pass. Photos are saved on your device with the flight. They are not uploaded.
Creator codes
If you enter a content creator's code, we record which code your account used. If you then subscribe, we also record your Google Play order ID, plan and purchase date, so the creator can be paid their share. Creators are never told who you are, only how many people used their code and subscribed. The code does not change what you pay.
Payments and your free trial
Premium is bought through Google Play, which handles all payment details. We never see or store your card or bank information. Google tells the app whether you have an active subscription. To keep your free trial from restarting if you reinstall the app, we store your account ID and the date you first used the app on our servers.
Website visits (this website)
This website uses Vercel Web Analytics to count visits, such as which pages are viewed, what country visitors come from, and what browser or device type they use. It does not use cookies and does not identify individual visitors. We use it to understand whether the website is working.
Help requests
If you contact us through the Help Center in the app, the name, email address and message you enter are sent to us through Formspree.
Location
If you allow it, the app reads your device's approximate (coarse, city-level) location to rank nearby airports in search. This location is used on your device for that calculation and is not sent to us.
Friends and your profile
- Searchable profile: any signed-in Wheels Up member can search for your username and see your display name, profile photo and the number of flights you have saved.
- Accepted friends: once you accept a friend request, that friend can see your saved flights, including the route, times, gate, status and, while a flight is in the air, its live position.
- Your flights are never shown publicly or to people who are not signed in.
AI features
The Flight Assistant and the Starlink Wi-Fi estimate use OpenAI's API. When you use them, the app sends OpenAI a text summary of the relevant flight (for example times, status, weather, gate and delay information, or the aircraft and route) and, in the assistant, the questions you type. These requests do not include your name, email address or account ID. Estimates produced this way can be wrong and are labelled in the app.
How we use this information
- To create and maintain your account
- To look up and display flight status, gates, delays, and aircraft details
- To send you notifications about your saved flights and, if you use the friends feature, your friends' flights
- To sync your saved flights and preferences across devices
- To answer help requests and to tell waitlist signups about early access
Third-party services
We rely on the following services to run Wheels Up. Each processes only the data described here and is bound by its own privacy terms:
- FlightAware (AeroAPI) and AeroDataBox: flight status and aircraft data
- Clerk: account authentication
- Supabase: cloud database for saved flights, profiles, and friendships
- OpenAI: the Flight Assistant and Starlink estimate, as described above
- Mapbox: in-app maps. Mapbox may collect anonymized usage telemetry under its own privacy terms
- Open-Meteo: weather and turbulence forecasts for airport and route locations
- Frankfurter and open.er-api.com: currency exchange rates
- Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap (Overpass): city images and airport location data, looked up by place name or airport location
- Google (gstatic.com): airline logos, loaded from Google's servers, which can see your device's IP address when the images are requested
- Formspree: waitlist signups on this website and Help Center messages from the app
- Vercel: hosts this website and runs Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page visits without cookies and without identifying individual visitors
We do not use advertising SDKs, and we do not sell your personal information to anyone.
Notifications
The app checks your saved flights periodically on your device and notifies you only when something changes (a gate, delay, or status update), or when a friend's flight changes. We don't use a push-notification server, and background checks run at intervals set by how close your flight is, down to about every 15 minutes in the final day.
Backups
Wheels Up allows Android's automatic backup. If you have Google backup turned on for your device, data stored by the app on your device, which can include attached boarding passes and tickets, may be backed up to your Google account under Google's terms. You can turn this off in your device's system settings.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your account and flight data for as long as your account is active. You can delete saved flights at any time in the app. The app does not yet have a delete-account button. To delete your account and the data we hold in Clerk and Supabase, follow the steps on our account deletion page. Data stored only on your device is removed when you uninstall the app.
Children's privacy
Wheels Up is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Security
We use established providers (Clerk for authentication, Supabase for data storage) that encrypt data in transit and apply access controls. No online service is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
